Throughout the Camp, there will be a competition to select the Best Patrol, Camper, Sixer and Mentor. These are the awards available:

Best Patrol: The Patrol which shows the best teamwork and team spirit throughout the Camp will be declared the Best Patrol. Every member will receive a prize.

Best Camper: A special plaque will be awarded to the most outstanding P4 Cub Scout. He must consistently demonstrate the 5 Scout Law in action throughout the Camp.

Best Sixer: A special plaque will be awarded to the most outstanding P6 Sixer Scout. He must consistently demonstrate the 5 Scout Law in action throughout the Camp.

Best Mentor: A special plaque will be awarded to the most inspirational and encouraging Mentor who can successfully guide and motivate the younger boys in his Patrol.

Cub Scout Challenge

Good job, Raccoons! Winning 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze awards at the Cub Scout Challenge against more than 20 other schools is a credible showing for a relatively young Scout unit.

The P4 team of Eton, Darnell, Ben and Bryan did extremely well in winning Gold award in the Orienteering event despite participating in their first ever Scout competition. Congratulations also to the P5 team who won Gold award for Soccer through their two 1-0 victories.

Good effort by the Sixers - Derrick, Christian, Mervyn, Aaron and Shahris - in winning Silver award for their Roman Cannonball. Though they couldn't shoot their water bomb as far as the winning team, they can be proud of the fact that their construction was rock solid and also that they did everything on their own without outside help.

Happy Founder's Day to Scouts all over the world! Job well done to Christian, Noel and Naeson for reading the Founder's Day Message with clarity and confidence (even though it was sooo long!) And three cheers for Derrick and Ziyang for leading the Scout Promise with such seriousness and conviction. The whole school was impressed!

And for those of you who went to the Southeast Area Rally at East Coast - hope you all enjoyed it! Especially for those of you who have never seen other Scout units before - it must be an eye-opening experience to see so many other Cubs, Scouts and Ventures. Through the Rally, you can see the colourful diversity of Scouting but at the same time, you can also see the unity of brother and sister Scouts as we celebrate our Founder's birthday together.

One last thing to write about the Rally - it was really nice to see the old boys again, but this time with their Secondary School Scout units. Wenjun, Zhi Yuan, Daniel, Amos, Wei Han, Bharath, Zhi Shen and Adam - you guys have all grown up and we miss you!

Scout Testimony by Kenrick

When I first joined Scouting, it was just to kill time. At that moment, there were few activities which were mostly meetings. When Mr Lee took over as Scoutmaster, he organised many events and activities. Only then, did my interest in Scouting shoot up.

Only in the later part of 2006 did I get a taste of what real Scouting was like. I participated in a Camporee in Sarimbun Scout Camp and learnt many skills like outdoor cooking. Most of all, I had the opportunity to bond with Cub Scouts from other schools.

In the next year, I took a liking to Pioneering. The P6 scouts were chosen to represent our unit in the National Pioneering Competition’s Model Campsite event. It was not all smooth sailing though, halfway through the contest; the wind blew down our structures. Although we did not win, we certainly won each other’s friendship.

Now, I realise that Scouting has molded me into a leader, someone with character and discipline. I remember the times before I joined Scouts; I was an indoor person who hardly got off the chair. Now, I love going out into the great outdoors to cycle and have fun. Scouting has made me an active person through all those gruelling hikes and Pioneering sessions.

Through Scouting, I have made many inseparable friends. Only now, I realised what Scouting really means to me. Even though I might have had some regrets when I did not perform at my best, just thinking about what I have achieved makes the regrets feel unimportant.

Most of all, I want to continue Scouting in my secondary school to make more good buddies and return to my alma-mater's Cub Scout unit to contribute. This is because I feel that helping others is the most important aspect of Scouting.

Camporee Reflection by Derrick

Our Camporee was from 22nd November 2007 to 27th November 2007. In Perth, I learnt about saving the environment by conserving nature.

Firstly, we studied a tree and its parts like its leaves and bark. The bark that I studied had a rough bark that was quite thick. Its leaves are rough and the stem was thin but pricky. We also drew some water from the stream and examined the water to see if there is any organism living in the water.

Next, we did an experiment on water pollution. We took some water from the lake and we put soy sauce, oil, flour, chocolate rice, streamers, plastic bags, soil and some other stuff to pollute the water. The end result looked like Milo!

Throughout this Camporee, I made lots of new friends and I look forward to going for more of such events. I feel very honoured to represent our school and all the cub scouts in Singapore to go to Perth for such a memorable event,.

Camporee Reflection by Mervyn

I had the biggest shock of my life when my Scout Master, Mr Lee, told me one afternoon that I had been chosen with a team of Scouts, to represent our School and The Singapore Scouts Association at the 3rd Cubs Goodwill Camporee in Perth, Western Australia, from 22nd to 27th November 2007. The shock feeling soon turn into joy and a deep sense of pride overcame me. What an honour!

The trip was an eye-opener for me as I soon realize how scouting can build strong camaraderie and provide me with a chance to learn lots of things. Also, I appreciated the time and effort put in by the organizers, volunteers and teachers for making this event memorable and successful. The places we visited and the activities we participated in, both amongst our own Singapore scouts contingent and with the Australian scouts contingent, made me feel like we are one big happy family on this planet. The conservation activity also made me realize how important it is for us to play our part and help to preserve the earth left to us by our forefathers, so that the future generations may get to ‘enjoy’ earth too. Just as enjoyable was also our day trip to Fremantle, where I saw a submarine for the first time in my life and took a guided tour of the local prison.

One of the best things that happened to me during the trip was that I overcame my fear of heights. I have had phobia of heights since I was young. At the airport send-off in Singapore, I remembered sharing with my mother about my fear of doing any height-related activities whilst in Perth and her parting encouragement to me was....”The only way to overcome fear, is to confront it.” At the campsite, after much deliberation and with jittery nerves, I finally gathered enough courage to do the aerial runway, which involved being hooked to a safety cable and jumping off the platform of a hill, and sliding about 500 metres to the platform of another hill. A heart-stopping activity but at the end of the day, I am really glad that I conquered my fear and was surprised that it was not as scary as I thought it would be.

During the flight home, I decided that I will continue to volunteer and work with the Scouts for as long as I can, so that in future, I may have opportunities to organize such events for Scouts from all over the world to meet. The people I have met and the things I have seen and experienced during this trip will be remembered and treasured for the rest of my life. Most of all, I count my blessings for having supportive parents, who constantly remind me that the only failure in life is when we do not participate a hundred percent.

Our new mascot!

I did not have the time last Friday to show all of you the drawing of our new mascot. I have decided to adopt the raccoon as our animal mascot. Because raccoons are brave, resourceful and most of all, cute! Just like most of you!

Special thanks to Shuen-Zhi for drawing him. S-Z did many sketches before coming up with the final design. S-Z also drew him with a koala in preparation of our upcoming Australia trip. There is no name for our mascot yet. That is for you fellas to think up. Looking at the pictures below, he is cute, right?

Congratulations to Tiger Patrol for winning the Patrol Challenge Competition. After winning Patrol Challenge #6, they now have 26 points. Second-placed Eagle Patrol is far behind with 14 points and it is impossible for them to beat Tiger Patrol with only 2 Patrol Challenges (and maximum 10 points) remaining.

The race is now between Eagle and Hyena Patrols for 2nd place. So sorry, Fox and Hawk Patrols - I don't think you can get 2nd place but you are welcome to prove me wrong!

As you are aware, Derrick has been promoted to SPL - Senior Patrol Leader - after his outstanding performance during the Silver & Gold Arrow Tests. He will help to plan and conduct all Scout Meetings and activities. Derrick's Fox Patrol is now led by Christian.

I will be ordering badges, scarves and T-shirts for our unit but we need to have a logo first. I am proposing that we adopt the Raccoon as our animal mascot because it is cute, brave and resourceful! I will discuss this idea with all of you at the next Scout Meeting.

Some of you may remember last year combined excursion to Zoo with St Andrews STAR Cub Scouts for Amazing Akela Challenge. Well, they are organising an In-Line Skating Introductory Course next Saturday at East Coast and invited us along. Details below:

Date: 22 September 2007
Time: 7:30am to 11:30am
Attire: Full Scout Uniform

Please bring $10 for rental of gear and rollerblades and $5 for McDonalds breakfast.

Meet in school at 7:30am to take schoolbus or your parents may drop you off at East Coast Park Burger King Carpark C4 before 8:00am.

The In-Line Skating Course lasts from 8:00am to 10:00am. After that, we will have breakfast at McDonalds for a time of bonding with your brother Scouts. We will leave East Coast at 11:00am and be back in school by 11:30am.

Parents and siblings are welcome to come along and take part. All consent forms with details on shoe size must be returned by next Tuesday, 18 September, so that we know how many rollerblades and protective gear to rent.

3rd Cubs Goodwill Camporee
22-28 November 2007

In conjunction with the 100th Years of Scouting, the Singapore Scout Association and Scouts of Western Australia will be jointly organising a Cub Scout Goodwill Camporee from 22 November 2007 (Thu) to 28 November 2007 (Wed) in Perth, Western Australia.

Theme: "One Promise, One World"

Objectives:

* To hold joint outdoor scouting activities with the Australian Cub Scouts.

* To promote awareness on the Conservation of the Environment through field work in soil erosion and rock formation.

* To create opportunities for International Scouting, which include different nationalities, cultures, religions and activities through exchange of ideas and friendship.

Centenary Camporee is cancelled because of poor response so we won't be visiting Sarimbun this Sunday. :(

Real fire confirmed for Campfire for Youth Development Camp. Materials have already been delivered. The 06 Sixers and I will be setting up the fire. It should be a blast!

Congratulations again to Mervyn's Tiger Patrol for winning yet another Patrol Challenge this morning! So far, they have won every Patrol Challenge, scoring a maximum 15 points. Here's the latest standing:

1) Tiger Patrol - 15 points
2) Eagle Patrol - 7 points
3) Hyena Patrol - 7 points
4) Hawk Patrol - 4 points
5) Fox Patrol - 3 points

During the June holiday activities, we will have a separate Inter Patrol Competition with the P4/P6 Patrols joining us. Daniel and the old boys will also form a special SPL Patrol to take part during some of the events at the Youth Development Camp. With 9 Patrols, let's see if Tiger Patrol can still win!

By the way, the P4/P6 Patrols were officially formed this afternoon. The Patrols and their PL and PS are:

Well done, boys! To win 2 trophies in one day is a big achievement! Though the P5 boys did not reach the top 3 of the National Cub Scout Minds Quiz, we are very proud of them for reaching the Finals and attaining the Gold Award. Noel, Derrick, Christian and Mervyn, good job!

Congratulations also to the P4s and P6s for building the beautiful sandcastle which allowed us to win 1st Place for the Cub Scout section in the Bedok District Beach Bash. Take a bow, Kenrick, Wei Han, Bharath, Adam, Oscar, Ian, Jeremy and Ziyang!

Once again, superb work from everyone! There will be a 3-week break from Scout activities because of exams. See you all again after the exams!

Centenary Camporee 2007

To celebrate 100 years of Scouting, a Centenary Camporee will be held at Sarimbun Scout Camp on the last weekend of May. It is only open to Scouts, Ventures and Rovers.

But for Cub Scouts, there is an Open House Day on Sunday, 27th May from 8am to 4pm. Participation Pass booklets cost $10 per Cub. You will have to show your Pass booklet to participate in Camporee activities. Badge and photograph will be given. Food coupons, drinks and Camporee souvenirs will be sold separately.

Heritage Trail "Blast to the Plast"

Here's an interesting event coming up after the mid-year exams in May. It's like a Scout version of Amazing Race. Prizes will be awarded to the top 4 teams.

Date: Saturday, 12 May 2007 (to be confirmed)

Time: 9am to 2pm

Open to all Scout units in Bedok and Katong District.

20 teams to compete to go to 5 locations which are significant to Scouting in Singapore. Travel by bus and MRT. At each location, teams will have to complete a task.

Each team must comprise:
3 Cub Scouts
2 Scouts
1 Venture/Rover/Leader/Parent

The reason why there must be a mix of Cub Scouts, Scouts and Ventures/Rovers is for the units in South East Area to get to work together and know one another better.

Only the first 20 teams who register can participate. We will send our best 12 boys comprising PLs and PSs to form 4 teams to represent us and Bedok District.

National Cub Scout Quiz Finals

Yes! We made it to the Finals! Out of 20 teams, we are one of the 5 finalists. Congrats to Christian, Derrick, Noel and Mervyn! You have made us all very proud!

The Finals will be held on Saturday, 14 April from 10am to 12:30pm. All P3s and P5s are encouraged to go to cheer for them. They are your PLs and PS so you should support them! After the Finals, we will take the bus to East Coast Park to join the P4s and P6s at the Bedok District Beach Bash.

After 2 Patrol Challenges, Mervyn's Tiger Patrol is in the lead after winning both Challenges. Congratulations! Here is the ranking for the Patrol Challenge Competition.

This announcement is for P3 and P5 Cubs!

From Term 2 onwards, you will be put into Patrols of 6 members each. Each Patrol will be led by a Patrol Leader (PL) who will be assisted by a Patrol Second (PS). The PL will be a P5 Assistant Sixer personally chosen by me based on their Scouting skills and experience.

Each Patrol will have at least 2 P3 Cubs while the other members will be P5s. The members will be chosen by the PLs! The PLs are Noel, Derrick, Chaderic, Mervyn and Sean. If you want them to choose you, you should approach them quickly! Beg them if necessary!

Once the Patrol members are chosen, there is no changing for the rest of the year! During Scout Meetings, you will do all activities in your Patrols. The PLs will decide on a Patrol name and logo to identify their Patrols. For example, Noel has already reserved Eagle Patrol!

There will be a Patrol Challenge during every Scout Meeting. Points will be awarded. The scoring is as follows:

1st Place - 5 points
2nd Place - 3 points
3rd Place - 2 points
4th & 5th Places - 1 point

If not enough members in a Patrol turn up, they will not be allowed to take part in the Patrol Challenge. So the Patrol gets zero points! This will encourage members to come for every Scout Meeting.

In addition, the last Patrol will have to do 10 push-ups as forfeit - together as a Patrol! At the end of the year, the points will be added up and the winning Patrol will either win a special trophy or get a special treat from me.

Finally, if any member of a Patrol does something outstanding for our unit, he wins points for his Patrol. For example, if Rui Le's T-shirt design is chosen for the Combined CCA Camp T-shirt, his Patrol will earn 5 bonus points!

Inter-CCA Competitions

There will be 3 major competitions among our school's 3 Uniformed Groups (Cub Scouts, Brownies and Red Cross) this year.

Camp T-Shirt

Each Uniformed Group must submit some designs for a T-shirt for the upcoming Combined CCA Camp in June. The design must incorporate elements of Cub Scouts, Brownies and Red Cross. The winning design will be made into a T-shirt for all campers to wear at the Combined CCA Camp! If you don't want to wear a T-shirt designed by a Brownie, you better make sure you design an awesome winning T-shirt!

Best Cheer

Each CCA will perform a cheer at the Campfire during the Combined CCA Camp. The other non-Uniformed Group CCAs (Band, Choir, Soccer, Malay Dance, Chinese Dance, Indian Dance) will be taking part since they are also attending the Campfire. The prize is a trophy which the winning CCA gets to keep for one year!

National Day Banner

Most of you should be familiar with the National Day banner design. After all, we started this project last year! For this year, the Uniformed Groups will design banners according to their patrols and groups. The winning design will be hung prominently on its own from the 4th Floor in front of the Quadrangle for everyone to see. The other banners will be hung from the sides.

It goes without saying that we are aiming to win ALL 3 competitions!

Job Week Camp

Well done, Cubs! You did very well at the Bedok District Cub Scout Job Week Camp. Among the 5 schools at the Camp, we earned the most during the 2 days. Our total? $2,280! With the earnings from the Cubs who didn't go for the Camp, we should be able to earn $2,400 for this year!

Every Cub will receive a Bumblebee badge! It should be sewn above the purple World Scout badge and below the Frank Cooper Sands Award badge. You will also receive the Job Week Camp event badge once we get it from Bedok District. Here are some photos from the Job Week Camp. Enjoy!
